What is RTK?
RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) is a precise positioning technology that enhances standard GPS accuracy by using corrections from a fixed base station. RTK achieves centimeter-level accuracy in real-time, making it ideal for applications such as surveying, autonomous vehicles, agriculture, and drone navigation.
By installing a small RTK device on your roof, you form part of a high-accuracy GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) network that powers industries such as autonomous vehicles, smart agriculture, and smart robots. The low power device is essentially a GPS receiver – like the one in your smartphone – it’s totally harmless.
What is RTK solving?
RTK solves the problem of inaccurate positioning provided by standard GPS systems, which typically have an accuracy range of 1-10 meters. This level of precision is insufficient for applications that require exact location data, such as precision agriculture, autonomous vehicles, drone flying, construction, and surveying. By applying corrections from a fixed base station, RTK enables centimeter-level accuracy and real-time geospatial precision.
What does it mean for you?
It’s really easy to join our network and start earning. We will take care of everything, from arranging a professional installation to ensure you won’t even notice the device is there, to paying your monthly fee. The GPS receiver is about the size of a soup bowl (smaller than a TV aerial).
Are there any downsides?
There are a few points you should be aware of:
Internet:Â The antenna sits on the outside of your house, and a wire runs into the receiver box which sits inside your house. This hooks into your home wifi, and will use approx. 5GB / month. While this isn’t much bandwidth, it’s not nothing, so please consider this before signing up!
Contract:Â Since these devices aren’t cheap, we will have a contract that states you will not give it to anyone else / intentionally damage it. It’s a rolling monthly contract, so you’re free to cancel any time (although nobody has done so far!)
Otherwise, not much to know. It’s an easy way to get additional income, totally passively, while helping out local business by helping us to provide geolocation services.
